چکیده

If k < n, can one express the majority of n bits as the majority of at most k majorities, each of at most k bits? We prove that such an expression is possible only if k & n = n. This improves on a bound proved by Kulikov and Podolskii [KP17], who showed that k & n. Our proof is based on ideas originating in discrepancy theory, as well as a strong concentration bound for sums of independent Bernoulli random variables and a strong anticoncentration bound for the hypergeometric distribution.

Linguistic majorities with difference in support

Majorities based on difference of votes and their extension, majorities based on difference in support, were introduced in social choice voting as tools to implement the crisp preference values (votes) and the intensities of preference provided by voters when comparing pairs of alternatives, respectively, with the aim to declare which alternative is socially preferred. Moreover, these rules req...

Collective transitivity in majorities based on difference in support

A common criticism to simple majority voting rule is the slight support that such rule demands to declare an alternative as a winner. Among the distinct majority rules used for diminishing this handicap, we focus on majorities based on difference in support. With these majorities, voters are allowed to show intensities of preference among alternatives through reciprocal preference relations. Th...

Estimates of social consensus by majorities and minorities: the case for social projection.

Meta-analyses of research on consensus estimation have identified an asymmetry in the error patterns between majorities and minorities (Gross & Miller, 1997; Mullen & Hu, 1988). Members of the majority slightly underestimate the size of their own group, whereas members of the minority strongly overestimate the size of theirs. The present analysis shows that a single psychological assumption abo...

Ethnic Minorities’ Impression Management in the Interview: Helping or Hindering?

Cross-cultural impression management (IM) has not been considered much, which is remarkable given the fast rate at which the labor market is becoming multicultural. This study investigated whether ethnic minorities and majorities differed in their preference for IM-tactics and how this affected ethnic minorities' interview outcomes. A preliminary study (focus groups/survey) showed that ethnic m...
